FAQ

Q: What is an essential oil?

We’re glad you asked! An essential oil is a liquid that is distilled from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other elements of a plant. Essential oils contain highly concentrated levels of the plant itself, which can have an incredibly wide range of benefits—from stress reduction to cellulite and wrinkle prevention.

Q: Are all Twig + Petal oils organic?

Yes! All of our products are certified organic, organic, or wild-crafted. All of our oils are 100% organic and free of any nasty chemicals, herbicides, and pesticides. Not only is this better for you, the consumer, but it’s also critical for the health and vitality of the soil as well as the plant itself, resulting in the most powerful essential oils.

We keep everything as pure, natural, and straight-from-the-land as humanly possible to make sure you get nature’s most powerful benefits.

Q: Ok, that’s great! But are they USDA-certified organic?

Good question! Here’s the deal: USDA certification is a term that is mostly used by giant organic industrial farms (the kind that supply organic products to huge chains like Whole Foods and even Walmart). The process is expensive, and many smaller farms just can’t afford to keep up. We choose to support smaller farms because the quality is much higher. It allows us to ensure the highest quality—because we know the land that grows our products and the hands that harvest it.

We believe in supporting farmers that are committed to ethical, sustainable, and organic growing practices. Our commitment to purity extends even farther—not only do we use only organic products, but we also test each and every batch of oil with a process called GC/MS to be totally sure.

Q: How are Twig + Petal essential oils extracted?

Twig + Petal uses a low temperature steam distillation process for most of our oils. We avoid higher temperatures, which can break down and damage the oil makeup, diluting their potency. For our citrus products like orange, lemon, and grapefruit, we use a cold press process to ensure maximum benefits.

Q: Can I use Twig + Petal essential oils while pregnant or nursing?

There can be many healing benefits to be had from essential oils during and following pregnancy. While many can be safe for use, we recommend that you always consult your health-care practitioner before introducing any new element into your pre- or postnatal care, including Twig + Petal essential oils. It is always advised to avoid any single oils or blends that contain sage or hyssop (that goes for our products, too).

Q: Are Twig + Petal essential oils safe for my kids?

Essential oils have long list of benefits that can be great for kids, but as a rule of thumb, we recommend you use them a bit differently.

Kids’ skin is different from adult skin (it’s thinner and more sensitive), so if applying topically, we recommend you always dilute Twig + Petal essential oils in a high-quality carrier oil link. Rest assured, they’ll still get the same benefits. Or, you may want to try using a diffuser link with children so they can enjoy the benefits without risking a skin reaction.

And for safety, essential oils should always be kept out of reach of children (we know they smell lovely, but ingesting some types may be harmful).

Q: How should I store my Twig + Petal essential oils?

It’s pretty simple, really. Just find a cool, dark place to store your oils and be sure to firmly seal them after use. Essential oils can last for many years when they are stored properly.

Q: How do I use my Twig + Petal essential oils?

There are many ways to use your Twig + Petal essential oils. Follow the instructions on the back of the product, or refer to our website for information on a specific product. However, in general, there are three main ways to enjoy them:

Inhaling

Essential oils are composed of tiny, microscopic molecules of the healing plants they come from. These molecules enter the sinus cavities through the air and pass through your membranes, entering the bloodstream near the brain. Some of these compounds have been found to cross the blood-brain barrier, potentially delivering their healing benefits straight to the brain. From there, they enter the blood stream and travel throughout the body to support whatever body systems seem out of balance.

To inhale essential oils, you can simply breathe deeply over the open bottle, or place a few drops in the palm of your hand and inhale. Or, try using a high-quality water diffuser link.

Topical

Topical application is a simple and effective way to use essential oils. Because essential oils have low molecular weights and are lipid soluble, they easily penetrate the skin. Once applied, they provide a localized and targeted benefit. Essential oils are also great to include in a massage lotion or oil, as massage will increase blood flow to the application site, in turn improving distribution throughout your body. Try bringing along your Twig + Petal essential oil to your next massage session!

A word of caution: to decrease the likelihood of developing skin sensitivity (especially on young or particularly sensitive skin), try using a diffuser link to dilute your essential oils if using for the first time. We recommend using one drop of essential oil per ten drops of carrier oil. It’s especially important to dilute pure citrus essential oils such as lemon, grapefruit, and orange, as these can cause photosensitivity.

Internal

It’s true! Some essential oils can be used as dietary supplements for targeted and potent health benefits. Not all essential oils are intended for ingesting, however, so it’s important to be mindful. You can always refer to your on-package instructions, or visit the FDA site  for approved list.

When ingested, essential oils directly enter the bloodsteam via the gastrointestinal tract where they are transported to all organs of the body, including the brain. To ingest, try adding one or two drops to a small amount of honey, tea, or yogurt. Remember to start off small—essential oils are very potent!

Proper dosing according to label recommendations and other professional guidelines should be strictly followed to prevent toxicity. Always consult with a physician. Keep out of reach of children.
